Surgical technologists prep the surgery room by preparing surgical instruments and testing surgical equipment. These medical professionals also prep patients by shaving and sterilizing areas where incisions will be made. During the surgery, they hold and pass surgical instruments to doctors and nurses.

Fresno City College is California’s oldest community college. Students who want to become surgical technologists may be interested in one of the college’s surgical technology programs. MiraCosta College’s surgical technology programs are offered at its Oceanside campus.

Fresno City College’s Surgical Technology Programs

The surgical technology programs at Fresno City College prepare students to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification exam. The Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredits the programs.

To be accepted in Fresno City College’s surgical technology associate degree program, students must have graduated from high school with at least a ‘C’ average. They are also required to pass a background check. Students admitted to the program take courses in human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, speech, surgical technology, surgical techniques and surgical procedures. They also gain hands-on clinical experience.

The associate’s degree program requires students to complete general education courses. Students enrolled in this program need to take liberal arts courses and physical education courses in addition to the surgical technology major courses. This program requires 60 units total and generally takes two years to complete.
